Flax plants need a relatively low amount of water and chemicals to grow, whereas conventional cotton farming is a very thirsty crop to grow and requires a larger amount of chemicals to keep insects at bay. Are Cotton or Polyester Napkins Better?

On balance, organic cotton is the best option for everyday sustainability. It might not outlive linen, but it is far more friendly to the planet than polyester.
