With World Health Day approaching on the 7th of April, it's time to consider not only our personal health but also the health of our planet. Our oral care routines play a crucial role in this regard, especially when we think about the billions of plastic toothbrushes ending up in landfills each year. It's high time we reassess our approach to dental hygiene. In this blog post, we'll delve into practical tips and eco-friendly alternatives to help you create a more sustainable oral care routine.

Choose Eco-Friendly Toothbrushes:

A simple yet impactful step towards sustainability is switching to eco-friendly toothbrushes. Traditional plastic toothbrushes contribute significantly to plastic pollution. In the UK we are disposing of approximately 200 million plastic toothbrushes each year, and each toothbrush can take up to 500 years to degrade! Opt instead for toothbrushes crafted from sustainable materials like our adult and childrenbamboo toothbrushes, which are both biodegradable and renewable and come in a recyclable, plastic free box.

Use Natural Toothpaste:

Many mainstream toothpaste brands contain harmful chemicals and are packaged in non-recyclable tubes such as a plastic tube with a plastic lid. Transitioning to natural toothpaste made from plant-based ingredients can reduce your environmental impact while still ensuring excellent oral hygiene. Seek out toothpaste brands that utilise recyclable or compostable packaging to further minimise waste.

Invest in Refillable Dental Floss:

Traditional dental floss is often made of plastic and comes in non-recyclable packaging, contributing to plastic pollution. Switching to ourrefillable dental floss made using bioplastic made from corn starch that can be composted presents a sustainable alternative. It is coated in natural candelilla wax and uses natural mint flavouring. Our containers are made from glass and stainless steel and are intended to be reused. Refillable dental floss reduces single-use plastic waste and minimises environmental impact, making it an excellent addition to your eco-conscious oral care routine.

Practice Water Conservation:

Conserving water is another vital aspect of sustainable oral care. Remember to turn off the tap while brushing your teeth to save water, and consider using a cup for rinsing your mouth instead of allowing the water to run continuously. Additionally, installing a water-saving faucet aerator can effectively reduce water usage without compromising the efficacy of your oral care routine.

Proper Toothbrush Disposal:

When it's time to replace your toothbrush, ensure it is disposed of correctly. Refrain from tossing it into the general waste where it will ultimately end up in a landfill. It is recommended that you replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months, equating to 4 brushes per year. For the average family, this is 16 toothbrushes ending up in the bin each year, all sitting in landfills taking decades to decompose. We thought something needed to be done, that’s why we created ourbamboo toothbrush subscription service.
